Zaanse Schans

Sept 2024

Another solo trip!

I stayed in Amsterdam and took a day trip to Zaanse Schans. Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood in the Dutch town of Zaandam. It’s a place full of monumental houses, windmills, barns, etc. It was such a cute area and felt like it took me back in time.

How to Get to Zaanse Schans
I bought a day trip ticket at Amsterdam Centraal Station and took the train to Zaanse Schans and it took about 25 minutes. Once you get off the train, just follow the crowd because they’re probably all gooing to Zannse Schans. You walk straight, make a left, then you’ll be at a stop light, then make a right and cross over the bridge, then you will see the windmills! There’s also a large map incase you don’t have a big crowd when you go.

How was the Weather?
It was partly cloudy, partly sunny. This day, I needed a jacket with me.

What was the currency?
Euros! They take card here.

What to do in Zaanse Schans?
It’s a small place that you can finish here within half a day or full day, depending on how long you want to stay and if you want to go inside each windmill/the museums, etc. I walked on the trail to see all of the windmills but I did not go inside them since it costs money. There is a cheese farm/factory where you can do a free tasting of all of the different cheeses that they have. I am not a big cheese fan, but wow, I tasted all of it and it was pretty good! They also have boat tours and bike rentals too. I also stopped by the Wooden Shoe Workshop and this was super cool! I think every 30 minutes or so, they do a quick 2-3 minute demo of how they make a clog shoe! It was very cool to learn and see the different styles of clogs for different occasions. They have a bunch of cute clog statues outside of the workshop for you to take photos with. There’s also a souvenir shop inside as well. That’s pretty much what I did in Zaanse Schans. I enjoyed the scenery, went into a few of the free places, took pictures, and went back to Amsterdam. It is a very quick and fun day trip.
